Durgabai Deshmukh Mahila Sabha owes its origin to the dedicated efforts and dynamic Leadership of Padma Vibhushan Dr. (Mrs.) Durgabai Deshmukh, the Founder President. Andhra Mahila Sabha is the first voluntary organization in India that pioneered the cause of women and their empowerment. The college of Education was started with the motto of developing the capacities of women teachers in the year 1971 and has been elevated to the status of the College of Teacher Education in the year 1997.

The two units with a common strong goal collaborated to help women get quality training and also prepare teachers of high standards complying with guidelines of the curriculum framework for early childhood years.

In this context CIE. DDMS and PEMSL started a three-month certificate course with certain objectives.

Why Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)?

Article 45 in part IV of the Directive Principles of state policy states that the state shall endeavor to provide early childhood care and education for all children until they complete the age of 6 years Recognizing the need for the development of children’s personality, which has a strong bearing on primary education. It has been envisaged that children be provided with the indispensable maturational and experiential readiness for meeting the requirements of the primary edification curriculum. Training in Early Childhood years supports mothers to scientific and systematic rearing of children.


  • An increasing knowledge base of teacher trainees regarding growth. development and learning process of young children from birth to 6 years of age.
  • Inculcating sensitivity towards the needs of young children and issue related to Early Childhood Care and Education IECCEI Creating awareness regarding various teaching-learning strategies to be used in the training of teachers, Conducting research studies.
  • To provide employment opportunities for women.
  • To enable the teachers to understand the needs and significance of ECCE.

Salient Features

  • The course has been designed with a focus on training with hands-on-experience and practical exposure of participants in a different ECCE setting.
  • The course has been planned in such a way that lecturers and theoretical aspects are minimized and practices and hands-on experiences are maximized.
  • • There are project works, assignments through which participants will be confronted with the real grass-root issues and will be able to identify salient issues of ECCE.

The Faculty

The faculty comprises of staff working in the area of ECCE from CTE. DDMS and PE M SL and also resource persons from child health, child psychology having rich and varied experience. Also, resource persons in specific areas like puppetry, art, and craftwork would be invited as guest faculty.

Apprenticeship Program

The course has been designed to include the Apprenticeship program in schools. They would also have a chance during this period to organize and observe activities in different classes.
